Located forty miles east of Annapurna, Manaslu (also called Kutang), the eighth highest mountain in the world, dominates the Gurkha massif. The name Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word “Manasa” meaning “Mountain of the Spirit”. Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m) is the highest peak in the Lamjung district and is located about forty miles east of Annapurna, the world’s tenth highest mountain. The mountain’s long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions, and culminate in a peak that towers steeply above its surrounding landscape, and is a dominant feature when viewed from a far. When trekking through the Manaslu region, 10 peaks over 6500 m. are visible, including ones over 7000 m.
